Sea glass jewellery
SeaFog – Gifts from the Rising Tide. Handmade unique jewellery and gifts made in South Ronaldsay. Jan has lived on South Ronaldsay since 2004 and has many amazing beaches within a short distance of home. She says “Over many years I have collected beautiful sea glass, shells and stones and decided to make jewellery and gifts from some of the ‘treasures’ I have found”. Jan uses silicon moulds, jewellers’grade ice resin, shells, stones and se-glass found locally to make bangles, rings, pendants, keyrings and paperweights.
The beach finds are washed in hot soapy water to remove any traces of salt which could damage the jewellery’s top quality sterling silver findings. After the resin has set and the item is released from the mould, any sharp edges are removed by sanding and those areas then varnished. Many different shades of glass can be found and used: pale sea green and deeper cobalt blue are common but occasionally a rarer piece of red, yellow or pink turns up. Each of Jan’s jewellery pieces is unique due to the nature of the beach finds. Prices range from £5 up to £30 depending upon the amount of work needed to finish each piece and the rarity of the glass used. Jan accepts commissions but customers need to be aware that there is a limited colour range available at any given time.
