Celebrating a golden jubilee…
Published on February 16, 2017
2017 is a very special year for Orkney Arts and Crafts. Although our group has only had this name for the past few years, the organisation itself started way back in 1967. It is doubtful whether anyone in 1967 Orkney Craftsmen’s Guild would have expected the organisation to still be thriving and growing fifty years later but here we are in 2017 celebrating 50 years of art and crafts in Orkney.
Over the past fifty years many things have changed and it is good to see that our present-day craft exponents have taken on board the new materials and new techniques available, and traditional crafts such as straw work continue. Other things have taken on importance too. In the past there was a strong feeling of ‘waste not, want not’ which has come to the fore again in recent years as “Reduce, re-use, re-cycle” and our members take this to heart. ‘Thrift crafting’ is nothing new to our members.
We are in the process of developing some extra events to celebrate this golden anniversary year so do keep checking back here and on our Facebook pages for details of these jubilee events.
