Cards, Paper Crafts, Straw Work and Traditional Crafts
Sandra Higgins

For her Traditional Orkney Straw work straw is used to make chair backs and baskets. Chair frames were originally made from driftwood. The man’s chair had a hood to protect him from draughts and a drawer under the seat where he kept his bible and whisky! The woman’s chair had a lower back so she could watch what the bairns were up to while she knitted! Baskets, called cubbies and casies were used for various uses round the croft.

Sandra uses embossed metal and hand-made silk paper and felt for her embroidered cards and pictures.
